Just Fall In (POLL)
Wed Aug 09, 2006 at 03:45:50 PM PDT
This will be short. I am calling out to all of those who are any of the following:
In the service
In-Country (Iraq, Afghanistan, Korea, Germany)
In danger of immediacy
Have a relative in any of the above categories.
We are assumed to be anti-American - which we all know is the ultimate ass-u-me. I would put up our statistics against any conservative site as being more indicative of patriotism, devotion to counry and commitment to the Constitution. What say you?
O Wherefore Art Thou Aaron Brown [with Poll!]
Sat May 20, 2006 at 02:32:23 PM PDT
I confess - I've always had a soft spot for Aaron Brown. He was well known by Minnesotans like me. As a former native of Minnesota, Hopkins to be exact, we were comfortable with him. His reporting during the activity of 9/11 was pretty remarkable in its empathetic coolness. He was reassuring.
That's why, when I read today's Star Trib, I was delighted to catch up with what he was doing. Not only delighted, but reassured that he had not changed. All it took was this:
Q What kind of documentary would you like to do?
A I'd cover five kids back from Iraq and spend six months with them as they try to re-acclimate to civilian life. I would try to connect their injuries to certain decisions they made before going over. Whether or not the war was right, I know those kids were sent in without the kind of gear that would have saved lives and limbs.

Quality Quantity Qooking
Sat Dec 10, 2005 at 06:18:17 AM PDT
Welcome to Frankenoid's Saturday Garden Bloggers and everyone else! (Don't forget to check her column out today, it's on the Reco List!
I'm honored to be your guest host today. My hope is to try to take the mystery out of Quantity Cooking and to possibly even pass on some tips and hints for the accommodation of those "I knew you wouldn't mind if I brought my 8 kids too!" type guests.
My credentials: I'm one of 7 kids, hubby is one of 6. Family get togethers usually count 20-30 including the kids and I'm the designated Holiday hostess.. I've even done events like a sit-down spaghetti dinner for 75 members of a teenaged cross-country team of skiers and parents IN my
home, and my house it ain't that big. You've seen my previous work in this diary: HomeCanning for Beginners.
New Release from ePM: The farther the sight, the nearer the rain.
Sun Sep 18, 2005 at 12:11:17 PM PDT
Old sayings often have a grain of truth hidden somewhere inside. The grain of truth in the one above is that low pressure makes the air over the water clearer, bringing water and sky into sharp focus to the horizon. When the air becomes hyper-clear, experienced sailors know that a storm is coming and race to secure the ship.
Introducing freelance writer rba to the Community who presents a systems analysis exploring the cascading hardwired communications *network failure in the Hurricane Katrina *debacle. While it may seem to exemplify Murphy's Law, rba notes that Schwartz's law is more apt: Murphy was an optimist.
This article examines what circumstances just lent to the "Perfect Storm" aspect of destruction. It wasn't just Mother Nature, nor was it just chance. Excerpts after the jump with links:
Home Canning for Beginners
Sat Sep 10, 2005 at 05:53:27 AM PDT
With a Special Welcome to Frankenoid's Saturday Garden Bloggers!
First, a link for both U.S. and Canadians as a resource:
http://www.homecanning.com/
I've found that the biggest point of resistance to home canning is that of the dreaded "fear of spoilage". Oh, sure, it is possible to mess up, but it is also possible to mess up changing a diaper! (Yes, I have a son....those of you with kidlets will appreciate the comment...).
From that link:
Food spoils when enzyme, mold, yeast and bacteria growth is not controlled. Proper, safe home canning procedures control the growth of spoilage microorganisms, allowing us to keep food beyond its normal storage period.
So lesson one is: Get control of yourself.
Ripple Effect: Eyewitness, Baton Rouge
Fri Sep 02, 2005 at 02:43:19 PM PDT
I'm sitting cozy up in the Great Plains watching and hurting. Being this far away has helped me appreciate how the boulder was dropped on New Orleans, but the ripples are forming tsunami type waves soon to hit. There will be no section of these United States that will NOT be touched.
Upon receiving this email, I had to start this awareness drumbeat. I have purposely removed identifying marks from it. You'll have to just guess why I did that.
This is from a college kid. 22 years old. He's with compatriots with the same training and skillset.
Now focus on the ripple - this is Baton Rouge. Once filled up to overflowing with humanity, where will it go next?
See the extended entry for the "censored" email, and to pre-empt the question. This message was received in the past 24 hours.
Ideas for Washington in September w/poll
Sun Aug 14, 2005 at 03:51:21 PM PDT
I've been quietly observing the comments made to Armando's frontpager about the potential power of Cindy in Washington. Much discussion has been centering on exactly what is that power and how can one take advantage of it.
Please, use this as a repository for ideas. The collective intelligence and power of DKos is but a few keystrokes away. Use the recommend comment to vote for your view of the most creative or strategic comment.
Let's garner the top ten and then see if we can get some leverage from the Crawford current events.
After the jump are just some brainstorming ideas. These are not to be viewed as comprehensive, smart or worthwhile. They are just to get the ol' DKos brain a tickin'.
The scapegoat
Thu May 05, 2005 at 05:43:39 PM PDT
How convenient, the only female commander will be discplined:
"The Army said it demoted Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski"
It's out on the AP right now, 56 minutes old.
Anyone surprised?
There is a big question in my mind though:
Will she talk?
New Bankruptcy Law Impact Being Felt Already
Fri Apr 29, 2005 at 01:23:41 PM PDT
Source:
Twin Cities Impact So Far
"It's insane. We cannot keep up," said Arden Hills bankruptcy attorney Barbara May, adding that her monthly filings have grown from 20 to 50. "As soon as this passed the Senate, my phone started ringing," she said.
She's the director of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, and catch this: Judges are calling from around the country because they are having difficulty interpreting the new rules!
Just to quantify the impact on a relatively average locale, here's a look at the numbers per the article:
"Minnesota has a low rate of personal bankruptcies compared to other states. However, Chapter 7 filings in the first three months of this year totaled 3,980 -- about 15 percent ahead of the same period in 2004, but below the record level set in 2003."
More after the jump.
